Staying with the 8th Worcester Scout Group
We were woken this morning by the sound of the Hippo’s in West Midlands Safari Park next door to Rhydd Scout Campsite which was pretty amazing. Whilst finishing packing up the heavens opened and we quickly dived into the outdoor kitchen for shelter. The rain didn’t last long, and gave us an excuse to drink our morning coffee a little more leisurely! The kids had been keen to have a campfire last night, but we ran out of time so they toasted marshmallows on the gas stove after breakfast and had breakfast s’mores. Not a normal breakfast option!
We were joined last night by Christian, our Freelance Geek, who is with us for a few days. He has brought his Brompton folding bike so he can cycle with us. The 6 of us reached our start point and hopped on the bikes heading towards Worcester. We had purposefully planned a shorter day today as we wanted to reach the Worcester Show at a reasonable time.
During our journey we had been contacted by Hattie, one of the Leaders at 9th Worcester Scouts. She had reviewed our route and noticed we were literally passing her front door. She had therefore invited us to stop in for a cuppa, and had baked the most wonderful blueberry muffins (and got a packet of very yummy gluten free cookies for Jennie and Ollie too). We chatted and completely lost track of time, meaning 1.5 hours slipped by without us noticing. We therefore said a temporary goodbye and headed off down into Worcester to the race course.
Just as we were approaching the Worcester Show we received a phone call to say we were due to be on the stage there in the next 10 minutes. We therefore zoomed through the crowds and were greeted at the entrance by Dan (flying one of our Woggle JOGLE flags) and a few members of the Worcester Scouts team. We headed straight to the stage where we were interviewed about our journey by a member of the Scouts team and then by BBC Hereford and Worcester radio!
Once we reached the Scouts stand the kids all got stuck in to the various different activities on offer – tomahawk throwing, firefighting and catapults were particular favourites. James and Cara were dropped off in Stourport-on-Severn this morning and cycled todays route leaving a little after us. They joined us at the show and it’s really lovely to all be back together! We spent the afternoon on the stand, chatting and enjoying the rest (and we sold a few badges, neckers and woggles too)! We then hopped back on the bikes and cycled round to 8th Worcester Scout Hut, our home for this evening.
We are staying in ‘The Den’ at the 8th Worcester – a fantastically well renovated hut, complete with an amazing kitchen, a dart board, pool table, table tennis table, a TV and fairy lights in the beams. The kids were very excited to be able to sit and watch the TV this evening with a Dominos takeaway (our first takeaway all trip!).
We had a few other treats this evening. Christian had bought us face masks that caused a lot of giggles. We also had a lovely bottle of wine left for us by the amazing team at the Scout Group. We were visited this evening by Jennie’s uncle, Andrew. We introduced him and Christian to Taco, Cat, Gat, Cheese, Pizza.. a fantastically fun game.
