Day 7- Abriachan Woods to Drumnadrochit
Actual distance 13.12Km or 8.12 miles
Total Ascent 181m
Staying with the 2nd Inverness (Kingsmills) Scout Group
When we reviewed our route this morning we thought it was going to be a light, gentle, easy amble but it proved a little tougher than we hoped!
We started off today in beautiful sunshine. There was a slow incline to start, followed by undualtion leading to spectacular views of Loch Ness. Then, whilst eating lunch at a fantastic viewpoint over the water, the sky turned grey, thunder clapped, and the heavens opened with a vengeance.
In full waterproofs we began the long, occasionally steep, decent into Drumnadrochit through stunning woodland, and past beautiful waterfalls. The path then lead us down to the pavement along the A82 for the last 3km of the day which Ollie did not overly enjoy. But despite feeling rather windswept by every passing lorry, coach and motor home he ploughed on and managed to find enough energy to reach the campsite we had planned to stay at this evening.
The last 6 days have caused some havoc for Cara and yesterday was the last straw for her feet. With a total of 5 blisters she didn’t manage to start today and headed off to Boots instead. With feet all sorted (thanks to James’ first aid skills) she’s raring to go and she and James will try and catch us up tomorrow by cycling todays route.
We were happily joined today by Bethan’s Grandparents who have volunteered to be our support for the next few days. Excitingly they have found a laundrette in Drumnadrochit and already offered to help with the increasing pile of laundry!
We are very lucky to have extended our stay with the 2nd Inverness at their fantastic HQ (with showers!) tonight before heading out for some ‘proper’ camping on the banks of Loch Ness tomorrow!
