13th July

July 13, 2023 by Jennie Evans

The Struie to Inverness

Actual distance 59.16Km or 36.76 miles

Total Ascent 605m

Staying with the 18th Inverness Sea Scouts

Phew- it was a long one today- our longest one yet despite being day 5 of cycling!
We started at the viewpoint up the Struie and were accompanied by Mary and her sons from the 1st Tain. Within minutes of starting we were all too hot from climbing and so the coats came off, seconds later the heavens opened and we were scrabbling for waterproofs and were all soaked through!

Happily for most of the day we were dodging the showers and only got mildly wet (or maybe this is just us acclimatising)

We stopped at the Novar Arms in Evanton for a break and conveniently picked the day that the chip fryer oil was changed and so had chips for our lunch starter ( this was massively exciting for a party with 2 gluten-free members!)

Fortified we carried on and picked up cycle route 1. This is a quiet cycling route which was really well signed and very easy to follow, definitely recommended!

Alongside the A9 (not fun to cycle but there is a separate cycle path) we found a purse and so detoured to return it to a grateful owner whilst we were on the way to pick up our support van.

We finally made it to Inverness at around 18:00 just as the 18th started their evening meeting. Our cub/ scout/ explorer all declined messing around in the water in favour of finding some food.
