Day 2: Reay to Bettyhill
Actual distance 33.67Km or 20.92 miles
Total Ascent 562m
Today was tough, properly tough. It was very hilly with some seriously heavy rain, thunder and lightning to negotiate. One fall later, (Hattie) and we were stopped in a bus shelter eating sandwiches (made yesterday but not delivered!), waiting for some respite in the weather. Happily the weather was on our side and, just in time for the biggest hill of the day, the sun came out showing Scotland in all its rugged beauty.
We had to shorten our planned day due to the conditions and some tired legs, backs and bottoms but we can make this up in the next few days (hopefully!)
As we cycled a few groups of motorcyclists hooted and gave us encouraging thumbs up. We also met a guy who had cycled from Edinburgh, heading to Orkney who stopped for a chat.
We are stopping tonight in the lovely village hall in Bettyhill. We’ve been serenaded by Ollie on the guitar, played Herd Mentality and the girls have done some crafting. We’re headed to bed tired but happy.
